Hahn Estates

Santa Lucia Highlands

The Santa Lucia Highlands was recognized as an American Viticultural Appellation (AVA) by the BATF in 1992, from a movement spearheaded by Nicky Hahn. This benchland runs along the west side of the Salinas Valley above the valley floor, between the City of Gonzales and the Arroyo Seco canyon. A fault line divides the valley floor and the Santa Lucia Highlands . Its southeast facing slopes allow the highlands to take advantage of the morning sun. The area sits above the valley fog that shrouds the Salinas Valley each morning and the wind doesn't reach it until late in the day, providing a long exposure to the sun combined with the coolest temperatures in the county. The Lone Oak, Doctor's, Smith, and Hook Vineyards of Hahn Estates are all located in this region.

Arroyo Seco

The Arroyo Seco winegrowing region covers the mouth of the Arroyo Seco River . Deep sandy soil allows good drainage, and " Greenfield potatoes" (round river rocks) dot the soil structure. Warmer than the highlands but, with shorter days due to the fog in the mornings, this area grows very rich Chardonnay. Bordeaux varieties do well tucked into the Arroyo Seco riverbed, where the grapes are protected from the afternoon winds. The Ste. Phillippe Vineyard of Hahn Estates resides in this region producing the lush tropical flavors of Hahn Estates Chardonnay.
