| 2008 Chardonnay, Alexander Valley |
![]() Vineyards & VintageThe grapes for this Chardonnay were selected from vineyards in the cooler mid-to-southern section of the Alexander Valley, which grow on alluvial soils from the Russian River. This cooler climate helps the grapes retain their vibrant acidity and fruit intensity. The 2008 growing season started off drier than usual with normal rainfall the first two months of the year and then little rain in the spring months. The area experienced a very warm July and August which allowed for fully ripe fruit, but harvest decisions were critical to success. The Chardonnay grapes were picked when they had nicely concentrated varietal flavors and balanced acidity. WinemakingThe Chardonnay grapes were whole-cluster pressed to obtain the most delicate juice with low skin phenolics and high quality grape solids. Because the lots were fermented and aged separately in French oak barrels, Ed Killian was able to create a broad palate of blending components by selecting from an array of different barrel lots. The wines completed 100% malolactic fermentation and aged sur lie, with stirring performed monthly for nine months. This classic winemaking style has resulted in an elegant integration of the fruit and oak components, and enhances the body and toasty characteristics so important to mouthfeel and finish. Winemaker's CommentsThis classic Alexander Valley Chardonnay offers vibrant aromas of fresh lemon, yellow apple and white peach. On the palate the wine has a nice viscosity and creamy texture with flavors of lemon, stone fruit, clove and a hint of minerality. The wine has vibrant acidity and a long, lingering finish.
