Biography

Jerry and Lauren Bias

Jerry B. Bias, Founder and Proprietor of Sugarleaf Vineyards, and Lauren Maillian Bias, Chief Operating Officer and Proprietor are the powerful team behind the force of the Sugarleaf Vineyards. Jerry initially purchased the farm as a private retreat. The inspiration for starting a Vineyard came at the suggestion of a friend that remarked on how the property had all of the aspects to establish a great Vineyard. Given that Jerry has been an avid collector of wine this idea did not seem too far fetched. As an actively involved and esteemed alum of the University of Virginia, Jerry turned to the university to assist in analyzing the estate’s topography for wine grape production. Jerry, with the help of the University of Virginia’s Environmental Sciences Department, assessed the property to see if quality grapes could be grown. Together, they did climatology analysis, measured the elevation and identified the type of soil on the estate. It was determined that the land had phenomenal characteristics for creating a vineyard. Several people from the university community put Jerry in touch with wine consultants and together they began to formulate the vision. Once the plan was in place for what was Jerry’s hobby at the time, he then planted over 300 of the existing 2075 vines by hand himself.

When Jerry met his wife Lauren Maillian, she began to nurture the vineyard and took over as Chief Operating Officer. As the Chief Operating Officer of Sugarleaf Vineyards, Lauren managed the design and construction of the winery and is responsible for all of the day-to-day activities including, accounting, marketing the emerging boutique vineyard, ensuring that high quality standards are maintained and implementing procedures so that the regulatory issues surrounding the wine industry are followed. Other areas of the brand that Lauren is responsible for are the design and sale of the vineyards line of apparel and wine accessories, and the organization and planning of Sugarleaf’s private and special events. Lauren and Jerry remain committed to producing fine wines and work closely with Sugarleaf’s winemaker to make their vision a reality.

Daniel Neumeister

Daniel Neumeister, Winemaker and Vineyard Manager

Dan’s journey into wine started with a great bottle of Italian wine at a restaurant in downtown LA. Realizing there was a vast realm of wine to be tasted from regions all over the world he started developing his palate on the California coast. In 2001 he came back to Virginia where the mountains, seasons, and people had beckoned him home. Once back in Virginia he quickly realized his desire to become a part of the flourishing local wine industry and became very eager to face the challenges of the Virginia growing season. In the spring of 2002 he crossed paths with several other winery and vineyard operations, working hard at bottling and in the vineyards. Through Chris Hill a dedicated consultant and the sage advice of many respected wine industry professionals Dan joined our vibrant team in the summer of 2002. Our 4 acre vineyard had just been planted and had great room for experience, development, and meticulous growth training. While our vineyard was in its young growth years Dan nurtured the vineyard through his diligent vineyard management while he also spent his first harvest helping King Family Vineyards and working at White Hall Vineyards in the fall of 2002. In the spring of 2003 he took a job as the Assistant Winemaker at nearby White Hall Vineyards while working at Sugarleaf. Under the leadership of Winemaker Michael Panczak he started hand crafting award winning wines. After years of wine industry viticulture seminars and enology short courses offered through Virginia Tech he started turning his grape growing skills into winemaking practices. While gaining a reputation for growing top quality Virginia fruit and focusing on the marriage of vineyard and winery techniques, plans for Sugarleaf Vineyards crush facility began in the fall of 2004. By the summer of 2005 the winery was complete and needed nothing but a test run. In the fall of 2006 with a beautiful dry growing season Dan took Sugarleaf Vineyards into its first full scale crush producing an outstanding premier vintage that immediately won Sugarleaf its hard earned Silver and Bronze Medals. His enthusiasm, dedication, and understanding of Virginia viticulture show in all of Sugarleaf Vineyard’s wines.

Romulus Pascal

Pascal joined Sugarleaf at the end of 2006 as Assistant Vineyard Manager. He works closely with Dan to ensure that the vineyard is thriving, the vines are properly trained, maintained, pruned, and healthy. His dedication, commitment and tireless work show in the splendor and overall strength of the vineyard.
